Lynchburg Candied Apples

I was the manager of a restaurant, Miss Mary Bobo's Boarding House in Lynchburg, for 32 years. Our most requested recipe, by far, was "Lynchburg Candied Apples," which we had every day. Guests wouldn’t let us take it off the menu. The popularity of the recipe may have to do with the the flavoring: Jack Daniel's Tennessee Whiskey, distilled in Lynchburg. One time, things got a little too spirited in the kitchen when three different cooks, unaware of what the others had done, each added some hometown product to the recipe. At dinner that day, a gentleman guest took one bite and said, "Honey, these apples gonna need a chaser!" In Miss Mary's day she did not allow any alcohol at the Boarding House, not to cook with and no tippling by the boarders in their rooms either. She died at 102 years old in 1983 and I took over and immediately started cooking with whiskey. People loved it! We've written four cookbooks from the Boarding House and the consumers demanded that the "Lynchburg Candied Apples" were printed in each one. This recipe is still used at Miss Mary Bobo’s every day. The guests demand it!
